Womb Cancer in the news!

25/9/2014

It's not very often that womb cancer gets any publicity and sadly when it does it is usually of the "obesity is to blame" angle. So you can imagine how happy I was to read the recent article in The Guardian - written by a lady who is going through womb cancer treatment herself at the moment.

Finally an article written by someone who knew what she was talking about and someone who wasn't going to try and blame women who had womb cancer for somehow bringing it on themselves by being fat and lazy, as other articles have done in the past.

The article appeared in The Guardian on Monday 22nd Sept (on the website the evening before) and in it, the writer of the piece, Daloni Carlise, explained that even though, as a journalist who writes about health matters for a living, she had never heard of womb cancer before she was diagnosed.

In her article she tells of 2 women of different ages, one just 20 and the other in her 50's who both have womb cancer. She also speaks to a consultant in clinical oncology at the Royal Marsden hospital who says that there needs to be more awareness. That's one comment that I won't disagree with.

To read the full article go to The Guardian website here

Hopefully this article won't be the last of its kind - womb cancer and the women who are diagnosed deserve better media coverage than they have had in the past.

Lymphoedema Awareness

15/9/2014

Did you know that this week ( 15th - 22d Sept) is Lymphoedema awareness week? Do you even know what lymphoedema is?

If you don't then you are not alone as it's something that not many people know about - unless of course you have it.

Lymphoedema is a swelling that develops as a result of an impaired lymphatic system. This may be as a result of the lymphatic system not developing properly (Primary Lymphoedema) or through damage or trauma, (Secondary Lymphoedema) such as surgery to remove lymph nodes or radiotherapy. It can affect any part of the body but is most commonly seen in an arm or a leg, such as after breast cancer or gynaecological cancer. It's not something that just affects women either, it can also affect men.

Although it is thought to be a relatively uncommon condition, a recent study has estimated that at least 240,000 people in the UK may be affected by lymphoedema.

Because it is not very common, the condition is widely mis-understood, even by the medical profession, with many patients being mis-diagnosed or being told their is nothing that can be done for them.

Thankfully The Lymphoedema Support Network has lots of great information about the condition and details of where to get help and support.

Raising awareness of the condition is vital in helping to improve support for patients so please do your bit this week and support Lymphoedema Awareness week. You can find more information here

Our Big Day Out in Birmingham - 6th Sept 2014

9/9/2014

Well, Birmingham played host for the second year running to WCSUK's Big Day Out - our annual meet up and a chance to raise awareness and spread the word about womb cancer.

Ladies started arriving in Birmingham on Friday evening; most of us were staying in the same hotel so it was a great evening as we met up in the bar (who'd have guessed that one??) and got to know each other. Some of us had met last year but there were some new peachies around this year so it was great fun to put faces to names that we had only known via Facebook!!

Others arrived on Saturday and in the afternoon we made out way up to the town square - the area known as "the floosie in the Jacuzzi" - and then we got our peach knickers out and started waving them in the air!!!

It was a lovely sunny day and many people stopped for a chat and we had the chance to explain why we waving peach knickers about; the serious side of what we were doing and the reason why we were there.

As last year, we managed to persuade some of the local constabulary to pose with us for some photographs and some of the ladies even managed to climb aboard the open top sightseeing bus and we got some great photographs.

It was an amazing and emotional weekend for us all. It was wonderful to have so many brave and inspirational women together and also so nice that some of them came along with their husbands/partners and they felt comfortable being with us. Very often the men in our lives can get forgotten about but I am so pleased that the guys who came along at the weekend felt comfortable enough to be with us and join in - they also took some amazing photographs so thank you guys!

So we can rest assured that Birmingham has been "peached" again and lots of awareness has been raised. If you'd like to have a look at some of the photographs then pop  over to the Facebook page here

Thank you to all the lovely ladies (and guys!!) who came along and I guess we'll see you again next year!!

September has arrived!

September has finally arrived and Womb Cancer Awareness month is underway! There are lots of peachy pictures being posted on Facebook; some of our ladies have invited all their female friends to post a peach themed picture each day to their profile to help raise awareness!

Lots of our cards have gone out over recent days; so many in fact that I actually ran out. Thankfully yesterday a new batch arrived, so that's another 1,000 to be sent out over coming months. If you can help distribute some then email me at wcsuk@hotmail.co.uk and I'll pop some in the post to you. 1,000 have already gone out since we  launched the new website in April so that means that many more women will be able to find us.

I'm busy packing ready to head off to Birmingham for our awareness event on Saturday. If you are in the area and would like to join us then you can find the details here

Hopefully the weather will be as lovely as it was last year and we'll have a great time again. Of course, its not just about having a good time; we are there primarily to raise awareness of womb cancer. The women who are coming along are at all stages of their own journey with womb cancer yet will be there to lend their voice to the awareness campaign.

So, I'll see you when I get back - hopefully with lots of photographs!!

It's time to go Peachy!!

Well, it's that time of year again. September is womb cancer awareness month so today see's the start of a month long campaign to get the word out about womb cancer and try and raise as much awareness as possible.

The 2014 campaign will be the 4th that we have done and although we raise awareness throughout the year, it's always good to have a dedicated campaign to really focus on the issue and spread as awareness

Most of our awareness raising is done via social media, and I make good use of this as I am always "tweeting" via our twitter feed and posting on the Facebook page  This year I am also going to give Pinterest a go to see if that is a suitable platform for raising awareness. Check out my womb cancer awareness board there.

There are also events happening in the "real world" to help raise awareness.

After our successful meet up in Birmingham last year we are going back with our peach knickers again. We'll be in Victoria Square in Birmingham City Centre on Sat 6th Sept - you can find out more here

A lovely lady in Nottingham is doing a Posh Peach Pedi &/or Manicure on Saturday 20th September, which is of course International Womb Cancer Awareness Day. You can find more details here

Another lovely lady, who makes wonderful candles has offered to make some peach candles for us so pop over to her Facebook page here and say that Kaz has sent you!!

There is also an online auction that I am running at the end of September to help raise funds for the research project that Dr Ellis is doing at Hammersmith Hospital. You can find out more about that here There will be lots of amazing items up for grabs there so please make sure that you join in and help us raise lots of money for the research project.

Hopefully there will be other events happening throughout the month - if you are planning anything then please let me know.

So, here's to another successful womb cancer awareness campaign. Help us spread the word and talk about womb cancer. Remember that many of us that have been diagnosed had never heard of it before we were given that diagnosis so raising awareness is vital
